Once you have selected a template, the next step is to define how the merge tags in the template should be processed.
Merge Mappings connect the merge tags discovered in the template with data from your Google Sheets™ spreadsheet. In other words, they tell AnyMerge Docs where the data comes from and how it should be inserted into the generated document.
When you click Open, AnyMerge Docs scans the selected template and automatically discovers all merge tags used in the document.
On the left, you'll see a list of all merge tags found in the template. Select a merge tag to configure it.
On the right, you'll find options to configure the selected merge tag.
Select the source value used for the selected merge tag.
The drop-down list contains all column names found in the header row of the source sheet. You can also choose a Dynamic Value, which provides values generated by the add-on instead of values stored in the spreadsheet.
Choose how the selected value should be processed before it is inserted into the generated document.
Available options include:
Depending on the selected merge type, additional options may become available.
Once configured, Merge Mappings are automatically saved as part of the Sheet Configuration and restored whenever you return to the sheet.
If Merge Mappings have already been configured for the selected sheet, AnyMerge Docs automatically restores the previously saved settings whenever possible. This allows you to reopen the dialog at any time and continue where you left off without repeating the setup.
Renaming or reordering columns does not break existing mappings because AnyMerge Docs tracks mapped columns internally.
Before Merge Mappings can be saved, AnyMerge Docs verifies that every merge tag discovered in the template has been configured correctly.
If a previously mapped source column has been deleted from the sheet, the affected merge tag must be configured again before the mappings can be saved.
For example, if the template contains the merge tag:
{{firstName}}
but no source column is assigned, the add-on will display the following message:
Merge tag {{firstName}} is not mapped to any column. Configure it in Merge Mappings or remove it from the template.
This validation helps prevent incomplete configurations and ensures that document generation can proceed successfully.
Once configured, Merge Mappings are saved as part of the Sheet Configuration for the selected sheet and are automatically restored whenever you return to that sheet.
Merge Mappings are one of the most powerful features of AnyMerge Docs. They allow you to control exactly how each merge tag is transformed in the generated document while keeping the setup simple and easy to maintain.
